Three strategies for helping students discuss controversial issues

While the benefits of engaging multiple and diverse perspectives in the classroom may be simple to understand, putting it into practice with students is much harder. This article describes a research-based pedagogical approach developed at Rutgers University which scaffolds students in “Respectful Debate” by engaging empathy and perspective taking.
